The Laboratories served by Bio/Data Corporation include those performing
diagnostic tests, monitoring therapies, developing new therapeutics (drug
discovery), verifying drug efficiency assessing risk in population studies, and
investigating platelet physiology, cellular interactions and molecular pathways.
Each type of hemostasis laboratory - clinical, research, governmental,
specialized, pharmaceutical and veterinary - focuses on particular aspect of
platelet function testing or coagulation testing.
These laboratories use our products, to perform tests, which include Platelet
Aggregometers, Aggregation Reagents or agonists (including ADP, Collagen,
Ristocetin, Arachidonic Acid, Epinephrine, and Thrombin), Coagulation
Reagents, (Thromboplastin, APTT reagent), Controls (Normal and Abnormal
Control Plasmas), and Accessories (stir bars, test tubes, and pipette tips).
A variety of tests are required to detect platelet abnormalities, investigate platelet
mechanisms, or monitor antiplatelet therapy. Test results are used to minimize
organ damage from acute events (strokes or hear attacks), follow at-risk
individuals, as well as subsequent risk (second heart attack, stroke, or those with
stents and other implanted devices), and confirm that aspirin and antiplatelet
therapy are effective.
During testing for platelet function abnormalities using Bio/Data Corporation's
platelet aggregometers, distinctive curves (aka patterns, graphs, tracings) are
recorded and displayed. These curves are assessed for known platelet
abnormalities or used as standard curves for interpolating results for von
Willebrand Disease (vWD). There is an increasing demand for ristocetin
cofactor assay tests, because of vWD's prevalence and symptoms exhibited
during a woman's menstrual period (menorhagia).
Some test procedures, such as HIT (Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia) test for
life threatening drug interactions and are becoming routine. HIT test results also
improve reimbursement for hospital pharmacies. The Company's platelet
agonists are used to activate, stimulate or evoke a response from platelets, while
lyophilized platelets and washed platelet solutions add convenience and
consistency to platelet function testing. Routine diagnostic testing has been
updated to step by step on screen instructions and touch screen operation,
eliminating the need for highly trained specialists. For complete listing of our
platelet function testing products, please refer to our Aggregation section of the
site.
Bio/Data Corporation's coagulation reagents and controls are useful to
diagnosing blood diseases and disorders. The Company's customer base
utilizes a wide range of products, creating and growing demand for our
advanced, constantly evolving technologies. For complete listing of our
coagulation products, please refer to our Coagulation section of the site.
Types of Laboratories Bio/Data Corporation Supplies:
- Hospital (Clinical) Laboratories - Hospitals bring laboratory testing services
to the local level. Common clinical applications such as platelet function panels and
Ristocetin CoFactor Assays (vW Factor Assay), confirming diagnoses of HIT (Heparin
Induced Thrombocytopenia), evaluating and monitoring of patients with congenital or
acquired platelet function abnormalities and / or platelet disorders, managing
antiplatelet therapy, pre and post operative support of LVAD patients, and marker
determination of drug induced platelet dysfunction.
- University Medical Center & Medical School Laboratories - Medical
schools and university laboratories throughout the US and around the world rely on
Bio/Data Corporation's products in their specialized testing, research efforts and
educational and training programs. Various research applications range from
evaluating platelet vascular interactions to examine antiplatelet and lytic agent effects
in thrombotic models or events, assessing clinical trial results for new therapies and
therapeutics.
- Other Laboratories - Governmental, specialized hematology and coagulation
laboratories often utilize our Company's platelet function testing, coagulation testing
and hemostasis monitoring, instrumentation for assessing diagnostic results on
sticky platelet syndrome, antiplatelet therapy, HIT, HIPA, RIPA, as well as routine and
special coagulation tests. Applications include ongoing evaluation of aspirin
antiplatelet therapy in stroke prevention, as well as determining qualitative or
quantitative platelet abnormalities and coagulopathies that can cause bleeding or
clotting disorders.
- Pharmaceutical Laboratories and CRO's - Pharmaceutical laboratories and
CRO's utilize the Company's aggregometers and reagents to evaluate prescription
medications and how they impact patients' lives and to document clinical trial efficacy
and results. Utilizing proprietary drug delivery and testing technologies,
pharmaceutical laboratories study antiplatelet compounds, examine anti-inflammatory
medications, also perform leukocyte aggregation and similar analyses to evaluate
platelet leukocyte or cellular and molecular interactions, learn about micro-volume
capacity for discovery, and develop pre-clinical or small animal model studies. These
labs utilize the Platelet Aggregation Profiler series of instruments for data collection
and analysis. Including the powerful GraphPad biostatistical Prism software featured
on our PAP-8E, Platelet Aggregation Profiler.
- Biotechnology Laboratories - As the field of biotechnology continues to grow,
Bio/Data Corporation offers alternate site laboratories sophisticated instrumentation,
reagents, and software necessary to pave the way for laboratory advancements.
Some biotechnology laboratory applications measure activity and effectiveness of
recombinant and traditional agents and genetic abnormalities and markers, study the
effects of engineered surfaces on platelet function, and investigate dietary influences
on platelet function.
- Veterinary Laboratories - Bio/Data Corporation helps veterinary laboratories
perform routine diagnostic testing with avian, small, large and companion animals.
The Model PAP-8E utilizes small samples to measure the rate and extent of
aggregation, agglutination, activation and inhibition reactions, and to determine the
level of platelet function activity. Common veterinary laboratory applications measure
ristocetin cofactor activity in canine and porcine species, study platelet function
abnormalities in companion and other animals, and measure platelet function in
animal models, including primates, rats, mice, and dogs.
